Top Ten Underused Promotional Items

If I had a dime for every time a client asks us “what’s the newest promotional item” I wouldn’t need to sell any more of them.  We do like to preach to clients that the newest isn’t always the best solution.

The right product depends on the message you are trying to convey with it, under what circumstances you are giving them away, budget, etc.

So here’s my Top Ten List of The Most Underused Items:

Letter openerLetter openers – Though people do not get as much mail as they used to, they still receive some.  Everybody could use a letter opener.  They are so inexpensive also, and have a nice imprint area.

RulersRulers – Last time I checked people still needed to measure things too.  Rulers are very likely to end up in someone’s top desk drawer, and get used.

t-shirtsRegular cotton t-shirts – Just a few short years ago regular 100% cotton t-shirts were 90% of what we sold.  Now the Triblends, ring-spuns, etc. are 90% of what we sell.  The new ones are nice and softer, but also a smaller fit.  If you are just giving them away for an event, save your money and use regular cotton t-shirts.

Paper weights

Paper weights – These were very popular in the 80’s and 90’s, but not since.  Not sure I understand why as they serve a useful purpose and get you on your client/prospects desk top?

PuzzlesToys/puzzles – I’m speaking more of the executive type ones that are usually a nicer wood or metal material.  Puzzles in particular seem like a good choice.  Most people need something to piddle with while thinking or on long boring conference calls.

Cross penNicer pens – People will keep nice pens over cheap ones given them.  Give them a good, or decent, one and you will be top of mind for a long time.  Give ones with refillable cartridges and it is even better.

Gel highlighterHighlighters – Yeah, everyone uses them.  They are always close by the desk.  Makes sense especially since they are so inexpensive.

CalendarsCalendars – I totally realize that everyone has a calendar on their computer, tablet, phone, etc.  But a lot of people still like one hanging on the wall or sitting on their desk so it is easy to check a date.  Again, they are always close by so seems like a great way to stay top of mind.

Stadium cupsStadium cups – We do still get requests for these, but not that many.  They are so inexpensive and people do keep them.  Who doesn’t have a stash of stadium cups somewhere in their cabinets?

Measuring spoonsKitchen utensils – Measuring spoons, measuring cups, utensils for cooking.  Even if they just keep it as a back-up it is still in the drawer and they see it from time-to-time and it reminds them of your business.
