How To Choose The Best Beach Towel For You

Beach towels are a fairly popular warm weather promotional item.  When choosing a beach towel there are three main criteria to consider:  type of material, size and weight.  Here’s a brief guide to help you.

Materials:

Thick Terry is known to be the most absorbent for towels.

Cotton is also a fabric of choice when looking for absorbency in towels with Egyptian and Turkish varieties ranking high on the most absorbent cotton types.  Here are some different types of cotton:

  • Egyptian (grown in Egypt) and Supima (grown in America) are luxury choices--their extra-long fibers provide strength and smoothness.
  • Turkish and Bahia (from Brazil) are generally of high quality as well.
  • Combed cotton is an economical alternative; combing improves lower-grade cotton by removing short fibers.
  • Ring-spun cotton is made of yarn that has been strengthened and softened through mechanical twisting and thinning.
  • Organic cotton is grown without pesticides and processed without toxic chemicals.

Another popular beach towel variant comes in the form of Velour, which is simply a terrycloth cotton towel with the loops sheared off one side. They are less puffy (more compact) than full terrycloth, and the sheared flat side is useful for printing designs on.

Velour is made up of 100% cotton and has a tight weave. Velour towels are quite soft and provide considerable comfort when lying on the beach or at the poolside. While they possess a rather luxurious look and feel, Velour variants tend to be less absorbent than other types.

Size:

The next consideration to make when looking for beach towels is size. Since these outdoor towels are built for people to lie on, they should have bigger measurements. While industry standards have the typical size at 60 by 30 inches, most find that towels measuring around 70 to 80 inches in length are more adequate in providing coverage for lying on the scorching sand as well as a pool or beach chair.

Weight:

Sometimes the weight of a beach towel is expressed in GSM – grams per square meter.  In the promotional product industry though they are generally categorized by pounds per dozen.  Based on information provided by one of the top promotional product beach towel suppliers, the three most common pounds per dozen categories are:

The higher the weight per dozen the better the quality of towel.

There are other variants when judging the quality of a towel, particularly if you are planning on decorating them with either a screen print or embroidery, but these are the three main things to keep in mind.
