Buyer's Guide for Swag Writing Instruments - Types of Ink

Probably the most common promo item is a pen, there are over 10,000 options in our database.

Things you want to consider when ordering pens are the type of ink, type of barrel material, ink colors available, if it is a click or twist, stylus or not, colors and price!  Most people base a pen’s value on how it writes, and its weight.  Light weight pens are perceived as cheaper.

Here’s my input on those choices:

bic clic

This Bic Clic is a traditional ballpoint pen.  Ballpoint has traditionally been the most popular type of ink.

Gel ink and gel/ballpoint hybrids are favored by many now.  Gel ink is smoother, more vivid and more water resistant than ballpoint. This uni-ball gel ink pen is a popular gel option because it features anti-fraud ink that is much harder to erase.

You can get gel ink in cap style pens also, and with a stylus like these Islander ones.

These are InkJoy pens from PaperMate.  They offer a hybrid ink that doesn’t smear as easily when writing and there’s a wide variety of ink colors available.  Some sites say it is a ballpoint and others a gel.  It writes like a gel but dries much faster to reduce smearing.

Most people associate these stick pens with hotels, right?  They are the cheapest pens, and typically a ballpoint.  These are nice as they offer a full-color imprint.

That’s a good overview of pen nibs (which is actually what the tip of a pen is called).  Next time we’ll talk barrel materials.  Have a great day!
